In A Dark Dark Wood

July 27, 2016 by pmdrummond Leave a Comment

I just finished In a Dark Dark Wood by Ruth Ware, and I’m in awe of the writer. It’s a fantastic book. It’s a gripping plot. It’s a slippery mystery.

Ware stitches backstory in so well, the reader can’t see the thread. She builds character invisibly throughout the story, adding snips of this and dashes of that until each character is revealed completely. She has recreated the “five people in a locked house” mystery so masterfully that I drove myself crazy changing my mind as to who did it.

The mysteries I usually read are cozy mysteries, because I like the lightness of them and the humor that often permeates them. This was definitely NOT a cozy. This was an emotional rollercoaster that threw my reader’s senses all over the place.

I just hope the movie that they plan to make out of this book does it justice. If it’s just half as good, it’ll be a box office success.
